Why we have launched The City of Refuge

Why we have launched The City of Refuge

Simply driving around the streets in the towns of Mexico you realize there is a problem.  Stray dogs are everywhere, literally.  Skinny, sick, pregnant or nursing a new litter, the conditions we see are truly heartbreaking.  But countrywide, the problem is worse than we ever realize.

According to Legislator Valeria Cruz, an advocate for adoption and sterilization of animals, the country has about 28 million dogs of which 70% live on the street.  That’s nearly 20 million homeless dogs searching and fighting for every meal.  She also reported that nearly 500,000 more dogs are abandoned every year, so the problem is just compounded.

Seeing this day after day made us want to make a difference.  Our refuge didn’t start as a refuge.  We just saw so many dogs that desperately needed help, and we couldn’t just turn them away.  Currently we have approximately 25 dogs, but we have found homes for many others and are looking for homes for many that we have.  All of ours and many owned by neighbors we have taken to be sterilized.  Vaccinations and medical treatment has also been necessary.

It may seem inconsequential to help 50-100 dogs when the numbers of dogs needing help is so astronomical…but it’s not.  It makes a big difference….To the puppy bitten by it’s mother at 4 weeks old needing a tube inserted in her head to drain the infection…. To the 6 month old puppy covered in red paint, sick and suffering….To the 8 week old puppy with a double fracture in his leg who doctors said to just amputate, who now still has 4 legs. (See the photo of Lego ☺️ Now doing great)….To the litter of 7 puppies dropped at our front door in the middle of the night all with Parvovirus who all would have died without medication.   They, and many others, have all been given a life worth living.  They have food, shelter and love.  But so much more is needed.

The reason for our store, Pampering Pups, is to fund and expand the City of Refuge so that hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs can be off the streets, in a loving home and be pampered too.
